Guatemala is in Central America. Guatemala is currently trying to come to terms with a 36-year-long civil war, which ended in 1996. It is a country of striking features and a strong indigenous culture. The indigenous Maya make up about half of the population. Poverty in Guatemala is higher than in other Central American countries with an estimated 64% living in poverty. 81% of the poor live predominantly in rural regions. The country is a major corridor for the smuggling of drugs. It has a total population of 15 million and Spanish is the language spoken by most of the population.
