India

India is home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world called the Indus Valley civilization, which flourished during the third and second millennia B.C. Centuries of colonisation by British have left its mark on the country. With 55% of the population living in multidimensional poverty, India is home to one third of the world’s poorest people. The country lacks adequate sanitation and water facilities, offers insufficient education, and has one of the world’s highest rates of violence and discrimination against women. India has a population of 1.3 billion in the total area of 3.1 million sq km. It is home to many religious beliefs and boasts more than 20 official languages.

Toilets for St. John Vianney School, Nongbah

Nongbah is a remote village situated about 71 Km away from Shillong, the Capital of the state of Meghalaya. The project intends to provide hygienic sanitation for the schoolchildren and the teachers. The school has only two toilets. Constructing ten new toilets would avoid open defecation among children and thus help stem epidemics in the region. This project especially pertains to the safety and hygiene of girl students at the school.

Teachers’ quarters for Divine Saviour School, Laitkynsew

Laitkynsew is a remote village located about 60 km away from Shillong, the capital of the state of Meghalaya. SOFIA, though the support of various partners, established the only English medium school in the village. At full regime, the school will be offering education from kindergarten to class 10. The school has a boarding section for those students coming from villages further away, and a school bus to transport others who cannot be accommodated at the hostel. It is now required to build teachers’ quarters, which will attract better qualified teachers from the city. The presence of experienced teachers will boost the quality of the education.
